as i've said before in other post, i was putting up my skincare inventory in a spreadsheet and i realized there were some products that i've tried but i never put a proper review, so here i am catching up with my reviews. i bought the origins mask set two christmas ago, and i tried using it up now, so i guess better write a post soon before i run out of it.

this is the description from their website: a rose clay mask that deep cleans, retexturizes skin & perfects pores for a naturally flawless look - no filter required.
what it does: gently draws out dirt & debris, exfoliates to refine skin's texture & visibly minimizes the look of pores in one simple step. skin is left looking perfected & polished.
formulated without: parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, mineral oil, DEA, petrolatum, paraffin, polyethylene beads, formaldehyde & animal ingredients.
willowherb is crazy resilient! it's the first plant to bloom after forest fires. much like it helps heal the land as it grows, it helps skin rebound from dullness causing protein change. so you stay gorgeously glowing.

the packaging: it comes in a box with all three masks inside. there's a big plastic transparent window at front so you can see all the masks inside. there's short description in various languages and ingredients list at the back of the box. there's a plastic slider with all 3 masks inside. the other masks are clear improvement and drink up intensive. all the masks comes in 30 ml size which is more generous compared to pixi mask set. the rose clay one comes in textured pink plastic squeeze tube with white plastic screw cap. there's a short description at the back of the tube as well. 

the tube

the scent: i hope it smells like rose, but it just smells like clay. which is a bit disappointing. but that's a positive note since it's scentless, it's supposed to be okay for sensitive skin.

the product: the mask is pinkish cream mask that's easy to spread around. but it has this harsh bits inside the mask. it's not tiny grains like any other exfoliation mask that i've tried. it's bigger chunk but it's not that harsh considering that the chunk is bigger. but there's a bit confusion about how to use it. there's no suggestion to massage the mask on the tube. but when i checked the website, you're supposed to massage the mask while you're spreading it on your face. then wait for 10 minutes before washing it off.

the result: since i've tried several ways to use this mask, i will try to explain everything. if i just put it all over my face and waited for 10 minutes before washing it off, it would do nothing to my face. it would feel like regular clay mask. i tried massaging it before washing it off, using the water to wet the mask for a bit and massaged it in circular motion. it's hard to do that since the bits were bigger and it was hard already, so definitely not a pleasant experience. but after that i could see my face was brighter. then i read the website and massaged it before letting it dry, then after 10 minutes washed it off as usual. it's easier to do that way since the mask isn't dried up yet. after that, i could feel that my face is brighter. the next day, i would see those blackheads popping out. if there was some impurities, it would surface afterward.

in short, do i like it? no. will i repurchase the full size? i don't think so either. so, even though i wouldn't buy it myself, i would still say that any skin types could try this mask, especially if you like clay based mask. but if you have sensitive skin, you might want to try some sample because it contains harsh bits that might sensitized your skin. but i would say that freeman exfoliation mask is a bit more harsh than this mask, so it might be a gentler option. price wise, i think it's worth the price considering the generous size compared to pixi beauty. but it's still a high-end brand so if you are okay with drugstore masks, i would suggest using the drugstore option instead since it doesn't offer super marvelous result.

i like comparing similar things, especially when it involves money. as you've probably known, i like buying drugstore products, because i always believe that you can experience good things even though it's cheap or affordable. i also believe that high-end products have their extra points, aside from being super pricey, but i do think that you don't have to pay a hell lots of money to get good result. that being said, if you have the money to get the high end one, so be it. but if you don't, there are other affordable options out there. i've compared the freeman and pixi, so this time i'm trying to compare origins and freeman. it only has "charcoal" in their name that's so similar, so let's see the comparison.

as you can see, there's not much similarities in ingredients from both products. but both use bentonite and kaolin as its clay base. but origins use added myrtle leaf water instead of just using water. they also use charcoal powder while freeman use activated charcoal. freeman also has a lot of fruit and other extracts while origins surprisingly doesn't use any.

in terms of packaging, both comes in plastic squeeze tube. origins comes in 75 ml while freeman comes in whooping 175ml. so definitely freeman is cheaper. but both is easy to squeeze out from the tube, no mess. both is creamy and easy to spread around, but i notice that freeman is a bit thicker, so sometimes it's not easy to put thin layer all over the face. and the weird thing is when it's dried out, the origins turns darker while freeman gets lighter. and the origins stays smooth while the freeman seems to fill my pores, sucking out all the sebum.

origins doesn't have any added fragrance so obviously it only has natural scent from the ingredients. freeman, on the other hand, is known for its unique and refreshing fragrance. unfortunately, for the charcoal one, it doesn't have crazy fragrant scent. which is understandable since they use to match the scent with the name or main ingredients of the mask.

now, the result. i don't see any difference from both mask. they both work well in sebum control. both is not super drying like my previous innisfree mask. but if you ask me, i think the origins is less drying than freeman, but not too much. and if you've read my other post, you might know that i use this when i have breakout. i will put it on top of my acne and wait it to dry. sometimes it will reduce the inflammation, but if it's already halfway, it will speed up the popping process and even after you pop it, it will help speeding the healing process. at first try, i thought freeman works better as i've tried the origins couple times as spot mask, but it didn't work. but then i intend to use it up as i have another mini so i use it for spot masking and it works. i don't know what's the reason it didn't work the first time, but if i want to be picky, freeman is more consistent when being used as spot masking.

from price point, definitely freeman is way cheaper, but origins full size comes in decent size unlike pixi one. so it's definitely up to your budget. if you're looking for budget friendly option, i would suggest freeman. but if you want to splurge, i suggest origins over pixi. as for me, i like both. i don't mind buying origins mini and full size freeman. it might come in handy when travelling to have some minis. so for this comparison, i think the result is a tie. have you tried them both? which one do you like better? let me know in the comment.

i was bored with my masking routine so i didn't realize that i have two similar masks in my stash. both of them contains rose, so i think it would be a good idea to do comparison side by side and see which one is better. although pixi is known as affordable brand in UK, it's not that affordable here. especially if you're looking at the size. and though the body shop is not exactly a drugstore brand, it's still within reasonable price considering the size. so let's see which one is the winner for me.

the packaging: the body shop mask comes in dark brown glass tub, with plastic screw cap, which is quite heavy but it contains 75 ml of product, while pixi comes in plastic squeeze tube and the full size is only 45 ml. and if you're environmentally conscious, body shop offers recycling if you bring back empty bottles to their stores. and if you can't, you can re-use the packaging as it's made of glass and quite big while the pixi one you can only throw it away.

the scent: both has different rose scent, the body shop is more fragrant than the pixi, but somehow pixi smells more florally if that make sense. and i don't quite like too floral scent, so i personally like the body shop better. but if you're sensitive to scent, you should notice that body shop has perfume in its ingredients list.
the product: the body shop comes in gel form which is easy to spread around and gives cooling sensation. it's also quite pretty to look at as it has rose petals in it. while the pixi is just a pinkish cream which just boring. and it's quite difficult to layer the mask thickly as suggested, so again, i like body shop better in this area.
the result: body shop is more hydrating than pixi one, which i couldn't understand why since it has alcohol in it. but somehow the body shop is more hydrating and plumping on me than pixi. so again, body shop wins.
so, you could see that body shop wins for me, but in picture, both look the same. price wise, body shop is more affordable here. but if you have both pixi and body shop readily available, i think pixi would be more affordable. anyway, i would certainly repurchase the body shop and wouldn't purchase the full size of pixi. if you have tried them both, which one do you like better? let me know in the comments..

i got the opportunity to try annie's way probably a year ago. i like the result, so i was thinking of trying more options. fortunately, the travel size sachet is sold at singapore's guardian, so i decided to buy couple more option to try. the first one to try is the charcoal and vit c anti oil jelly mask.

this is the description from yesstyle website: controls oil, deep cleaning and whitening. cleanses and tones skin in only 20 minutes. gently melts away dirt and acne. easily removes blackheads without the help of peel-off mask. the jelly texture helps calm and contract pores, eliminating redness and renewing skin. draw out oil, dirt and toxins and softens skin. shrinks follicle walls to purify pores. hydrates skin and leaves it feeling firm and smooth. moisture loss, oily complexion.
charcoal powder: with its strong absorbability and activeness, charcoal powder can buff out dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and pores cleaner and tighter.
glycyrrhiza glabra root extract: licorice is very effective in reducing the production of melanin and suppressing the activity of tyrosinase, and it is also an effective antioxidant.

the packaging: since i bought the travel size, it comes in a plastic pouch. it's covered by a carton paper that has description at the back of it. inside, there's a plastic pouch with a sticker that is color coordinated according to the type. for charcoal and vit c, it's black. there's another description at the back of the pouch but since the plastic is transparent, it's a little bit hard to read it. although it comes in 35 ml, since you need to apply this quite thick, one pouch will only last for about two uses.

the scent: this mask is unscented, so clearly good for sensitive skin and nose.

the product: the mask is transparent black jelly mask, really like jelly. it's quite thick so it's a bit difficult spreading it around. you're supposed to apply it thickly and wait for about 10 minutes for it to dry a bit then scrape... yes, scrape it off your wash. don't ever try it wash off because it's useless. and this is where a spatula makes a different. if you purchase the full size tub, you can get the long spatula for free. but if you bought the travel size, then you won't get the spatula. and let me tell you, the spatula is essential. i've tried using other spatula that i have but it couldn't scrap the mask easily. and it makes taking the mask off is a hell lot of work.

the result: after i managed to scrape the mask off, i can clearly see that my face is brighter. probably because of the vitamin c. as for the oil control, i don't use it regularly to see the effect, but i can see my skin is smooth and my pores is definitely tighter. but it's not as tight as after using a clay mask.

i think this mask might benefit lots of skin type. since it has charcoal, combination to oily skin might like it. and even normal to dry skin can try this too since it's not too drying, unlike clay mask. and who doesn't like brighter skin? i bet everyone does. and not forgetting that this one doesn't have fragrance so even sensitive skin can try this. now, the idea of using jelly mask is not that convenience especially when you don't have the full size tub, but if you're willing to jump in buying the whole tube just for the spatula, then so be it. as for the price, this one is on the middle range, so if you're tight on a budget, you might want to try the travel size first. as for me, i think i still like my clay mask.

i was going to singapore last december, so i decided to pick several masks since i'm running out of mine anyway. i was going to get freeman clay masks, because i like it when i tried their travel size sample, and they are affordable. i didn't know which one to pick but later i decided to get one mud mask, one exfoliating mask and one plain clay mask. i pick up the rejuvenating cucumber and pink salt for my exfoliating mask even though i never try it before. so, i'm hoping that it'll work for me.

the packaging: i can't remember whether or not it comes in any sealing, but thinking hard about it, i don't think it has any sealing at all. but luckily, it doesn't explode in my baggage. this one comes in a pink plastic tube with flip top. description and ingredients list all at the back of the tube in english. it comes in 175 ml size, which is quite big for a clay mask.

the scent: usually, freeman will have cute and fresh or relaxing scent, which is one of the reason i bought it. this one has more like minty fresh scent that's not too overpowering.

the product: it is a bright mint clay mask that's as creamy as other clay mask but with tiny exfoliating grains in it. it's creamy so it's easy to spread around just like clay mask. it will be start drying in 5 minutes. and as instructed, you're supposed to give a bit of water and start massaging it before completely wash it off.

the result: since this is exfoliating mask, of course after washing it off, i can feel my skin is so smooth and soft. a little bit brightening as well since the dead skin cell is all sloughed off. but since it's also has clay in it, it's a bit on the drying side, so you might want to properly hydrate your skin after using this mask.

as exfoliating mask, i like how this has tiny grains so it's not super harsh on my skin. it's not as harsh as skinfood brown sugar, so i can get away with this one if i use it sparingly. i'm okay with this one since i still lean toward combination skin, but if you have dry skin, you might want to skip this. if you're looking for clay mask that double acts as exfoliating mask, then you should try it. this is pretty much very affordable, so it won't break your wallet even if you buy the full size. but if you don't want to gamble, there's a travel size sachet so you can try. as for me, i'm glad this one works for me.

last december, i was in singapore. and since it's holiday season, i was hoping to get some skincare set. i had the fresh, origins and pixi set in mind, but when i went to sephora, the fresh is already sold out. so i ended up buying the pixi the first time. but i wasn't giving up. i finally found the origins one, and when i bought it, i was a bit disappointed in pixi one. with almost similar price point, the origins set has more quantity than pixi set. oh well, i have bought them, so let's try whether it's worth the price or not.

the packaging: since i bought this in a set, it comes in a box with holiday pattern on the border and transparent plastic window at front so you can see all three masks inside. at the back, there's short description in various languages and ingredients list in english for all three masks. there's a plastic slider which all 3 masks are placed inside. i have to throw away the box when i was in singapore so my baggage could fit, because it's bigger than the pixi one. the mask comes in a black plastic tube just like the full size one, but this one comes in smaller size, which is 30 ml. this is more amount than pixi set which each mask only comes in 15 ml. everything about the mini version is the same as the full size version.

the tube

the scent: this one is scentless. if i can pick some scent, it's perhaps because of the ingredients and it's super subtle. so if you don't like fragranced mask, you might like this one.

the product: the mask is grey creamy mask, similar to pixi. since it's creamy, it's easier to spread compared to freeman that's more dense. you can feel tightening sensation when it starts drying up, but it's not unpleasant. the mask turns darker as it's dried up completely.

the result: it's easy to wash off without extra work, and after that, i can feel my skin is fresher and brighter. i've used this as spot treatment as well, and depending on the stage of my acne, it helps calming it down and downsize the acne. but it takes 2-3 days to use as spot treatment before the acne is completely calm down and become smaller. and like pixi, this one is also not super drying, so if you have dry skin, you might get away using this once or twice a week.

i do like this one too. honestly, i can't choose favorites among my mud mask/charcoal mask. all 3 of them are good in different way. but if i can say, you'd probably considering getting origins over pixi, just because the origins might be more expensive, but it comes in bigger size. the full size one comes in 75 ml while pixi only comes in 45 ml. so.. it's totally depends on your budget and how frequent you use your mask. as for me, i probably won't buy the full size since i'm okay with freeman. but when i see sample mask like this, i will totally get origins instead of pixi next time.

the packaging: since i bought this in a set, it comes in a cardboard box with a plastic slider where all three masks are placed inside. at the back of the box you can read the description for each masks. on the side, there's ingredients list for all the masks. the mask itself looks exactly as its full size version. for this rose balm, it comes in a plastic pink squeeze tube with green screw cap. there's a bit of description at the back of the tube. it has same weight as the other mask, which is 15 ml. and the full size is only 45 ml! now i wonder why they say pixi is an affordable brand as the sizing is small!

the description behind the box

the scent: it smells like fragrant rose, similar to my old crabtree & evelyn rose bath products. it's quite fragrant, but it doesn't make me dizzy. but if you have very sensitive nose, then you should try sample.

the product: the balm is more like a pinkish white cream. it's as thick as my night cream, but i think it feels a bit like gel texture. it spreads easily, but i have difficulty to spread it out thickly as instructed when it's used as mask. i never tried it as makeup primer so i will only review it as hydrating mask.

the result: it seems to waste it if i put it for 5 minutes, so i stretch the wear time to 10 minutes before washing it off. first thing, it's difficult to wash this off using bare hands because of the texture. it's thick and slippery so using washcloth is probably the best option to wash this off. after that, i can feel my skin is moisturized but just so-so, it's not mind blowing or anything. it does brighten my skin though.

that being said, i don't think i will repurchase the full size. it's a standard hydrating mask and i think my body shop rose mask works just as well. i will compare them both soon, so wait for the comparison post. as for recommendation, i think if you have super dry skin, i don't think it's super moisturizing enough. but if you have normal to combination skin, it might works well for you. you should buy it if you have money to splurge, you love rose-scented product, or you love everything pixi. but if you don't, then there are other option out there. for me, it's not a must have item.

you can see from the ingredients list above that both masks have bentonite and kaolin which is usual since mud mask has kaolin and bentonite as its active ingredients. both also has fragrance in it, but it's way back in the ingredients list and in reality, i could barely smell anything. both mask also has ginseng root extract, but the pixi one claims ginseng is being one of the key ingredients, but on the list, it's listed in the middle of the ingredients list. while the freeman doesn't say anything about ginger root extract, but it's listed pretty up in the list.

both has a bunch of other extract. the pixi one has jojoba seed oil, squalene, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate which probably helps the after effect, it doesn't feel as drying as other clay or mud mask. the freeman also has various extracts, from papaya, raspberry, banana and coconut. although not all of them are moisturizing agent, and some of them even has exfoliating property. the mud choice is different too. the pixi one use sea silt (mediterranean and dead sea mud) while freeman use carbon silt (activated charcoal).

pixi mud mask is greyish, and creamier. it feels smoother and easier to spread around. it doesn't sting my eye when i apply it around my eye area (no, i don't apply it closely) and i don't feel cooling sensation after applying it all over my face. the freeman is dark grey and thicker in consistency, so it's a bit hard to spread around. and i don't know why, but it stings my eyes when i put it around my eyes, and i don't apply it closely, and somehow it still stings. especially on the first couple uses. but after that, it's gone.

the pixi one dried out evenly and smoothly, i don't feel getting pulled a lot when it gets dried up. the freeman however, if i don't apply it evenly, it won't dry out evenly. and it gives tighter pull. even i can see my pores when it's dried out completely, especially on my nose. both wash off easily and afterwards, i can feel my skin is smooth and soft, and it doesn't dry out my skin. so, both gives similar result.

so, if you have the budget, of course you could buy the pixi one. but let me remind you that it costs that much for just 45 ml of mask. while the freeman one is pretty affordable (under $10) for 175ml! for this battle, i can say that in terms of result, they are ties. but in terms of cost effectiveness, freeman wins. and i will update you with another battle with the origins mud mask. 

if you've been reading my blogs, last year (or maybe almost two years now) i bought several freeman beauty mask in travel sizes. i decided to try as many as i could before deciding which one to buy in full size. but apparently, freeman decided to reformulate their line, and most of the masks that i've tried are either gone or renewed. and i couldn't get the newer version travel size mask. so i decided to take a plunge. i wanted to have one exfoliating mask, one mud mask and one basic clay mask. i got the pink himalayan, the charcoal mud mask and the dead sea mineral which i have tried before. i asked my sister to get it for me so when i went to singapore for christmas, i could bring it home. and i didn't want to waste my time, i also got another two mask sets, and both of them has mud mask in them, so i wanted to make another mask battle. so stay tune for that. for now, let's try the mud mask.

last christmas we went to singapore and my husband told me to get anything that i like. before he said that, i already wanted to get a set of mask, either from origins or pixi. unfortunately, at my first visit to sephora, i couldn't find any origins, which is number one on my wishlist. so i got the pixi one instead. although i was hesitating because the size of each mask is too small. but at the end i got it anyway.

the packaging: since i bought this in a set, it comes in a box and on the inside, there's a plastic slider where there are all three masks is placed. there's a transparent plastic at front so you can see all three from the outside. at the back, there's a description for every masks in english and french. at the top of the box there's a three boxes that indicates which one is which mask from the top. on the side, there's an ingredients list for all the masks.

the scent: okay, this might be weird, i thought it would be unscented or smell foul, but it has this lightly floral scent, but very subtle.

the product: the mask comes in a tiny light green plastic tube with screw cap. at the back there's a description about the mask. the tube is similar to the full size tube, but this one only has a third from the full size weight, about 15 ml while the full size is 45 ml. see.. this is where i'm disappointed about. it is so tiny and the price is sooo expensive. there's an aluminium foil covering the opening of the tube so you don't have to worry about it being exploded in your baggage. the mask is thick grey cream that easily spread around my face. it gives instant cooling sensation from the moment i spread it out. it will harden after a couple minute and it takes 10 minutes to dry completely. afterward it will look like dried mud on my face.

the result: it washes off easily and afterward i can see my face is brighten. i can feel my face is smooth and soft and my pores looks clean. but this one is a bit drying, though it's not as drying as innisfree or face shop clay mask, but it's not moisturizing unlike peter thomas roth one.

i've tried this a couple times over the past month, and i have to say i like this one. it works well as mud mask. it cleans my pores but not super drying on my skin. it also gives cooling sensation which is heavenly feeling on hot days. but i don't like how the full size is only 45 ml with that hefty price tag while i can get freeman mud mask which is about 100 ml with lots of affordable price. which makes me think to compare them both. fortunately, i have a freeman mud mask in my stash, so i will make another mask battle after this, so stay tune. i can definitely see this will work on every skin tone, even on dry skin since this one is not so drying. but if you're tight on budget, i'd say don't waste your money. you can get other product with more affordable price and gets the similar result. but if you want to try something from pixi and you have the budget, you should try this one.
