  • About me
i used to buy brushes in set. at least they should have a powder brush, a blush brush, a contour brush and a highlighter brush. then for eyes at least they have a blending brush and a shade brush and maybe a bigger one for base color or concealer. but later i found that brush set doesn't always work for me. there would be a brush or two that i never get to use. that's why lately i've been trying to buy a set that works for me, or maybe individual brushes or smaller set so i can use every brush that i have. i've been buying real techniques brushes lately since i find their prices are good for their quality. actually i wanted to buy their everyday set, but i just like two brushes out of four, so i keep putting it in my list forever. but then i saw an instagrammer used this custom brushes from real techniques. the concept is interesting, but i was afraid it won't work. when i saw that it worked well, i immediately bought them all. especially when i read they can be used with powder or cream product.

the description from their website: customize your contour with a click. customize your makeup with a simple click. ultra plush synthetic bristles. cruelty free, easy to clean. 3-in-1 for custom coverage. custom contour provides your choice of sheer to full coverage at the ease of a click.
max - focused application for sculpting the hallows of the cheekbone.
mid - medium application for framing along the jawline and forehead.
min - sheer coverage for all over warm glow.
fully retractable for storage and on the go ease. use with cream, liquid or powder contour.
the packaging
description at the back
the packaging: it comes in a plastic box. there's description at the back in english. you can see the brush from the outside because it's transparent at front. as usual, they color-coded their brushes, pink for cheek, orange for face and purple for eyes. that goes with this one. you can see "cheek" pink label at the top as well as the handle is gradient pink-orange. inside there's a slider where they put the brush securely inside.
the brush inside the slider
this is the mid setting
the product: for a full size product, the size is similar to other full size brush in my collection. but since it's fully retractable, when you retract the whole bristles, of course it would be shorter. the handle is gradient of pink and orange and it's not cylindrical but a bit elliptical. there's a slider on the side with 3 options, min/mid/max. min means it would give minimal coverage, so all the bristle will be out completely. mid means it gives medium application, and max means focused application so only short bristles will appear. the bristles is duo-color but it doesn't mean that it's made of duo fibre. the bristles is very soft, just like the travel sizes one. for the contour brush, it's angled when it's fully out. there's no shedding with this brush. my slider comes out okay, but i read in the website that some of them received faulty one, where the slider won't work. i guess you can return it if you bought this in the US, but here.. i don't know the policy. i bought this from sociolla store, and i'm glad all of mine are okay.
min setting. look how fluffy the brush is
the max setting
the result: i only use this for my bronzer and i just use the min and max mode. for bronzing the perimeter of my face, i use the min mode. it gives subtle warmth to my face. no patchy or blotchy result. while for my nose, i use the max mode. it works really well for my nose. i've been trying to pinch my contour brush, but it wasn't the same. the max mode is way easier to use.

among three brushes, this one i like the most. it gives beautiful result with no fuss. i bet even beginner can appreciate this brush. i like how finally i can find a brush that i can use for contouring and bronzing at the same time. usually i need to pinch my brush to do so, but now i don't need to. price wise it would be more expensive than local brushes or any drugstore brush, but considering the quality, i have to say it's a good investment. plus, i sometimes notice several online stores have them in sales price, so i usually wait until they're on sale before purchasing.
i have freckles and dark spots. probably it was my own fault. back in my childhood days, i would be the only girl with fair skin among bunch. and being too stand out in a crowd is not comfortable. so i tried to be under the sun as much as possible, without sunscreen. i even joined the scout team which has a ceremony exactly at noon, in the broad daylight, under the hot and sunny sun. for about two years. obviously all my efforts were useless. back then i didn't know there are skin types, and mine is the one that gets burn but not get tan. that's why it's impossible for me to be darker. but dark spots might occur. and with pregnancy, the dark spots are getting worse. that's why i've been friends with vitamin c. so far i have good result with vitamin c. i haven't tried many niacinamide or arbutin yet, so probably after testing several vitamin c, i'd try them later. i also tried to use local brands for now. among those local brands who have vitamin c serum, probably fss and votre peau are ones that came out earlier with vitamin c, so i decided to try between those two. i picked fss for now.

this is the description from their website: non greasy, no animal testing, no paraben, no dyes, no fragrance. this serum is thick in texture and white cloudy in color. easy to absorb. for optimum results, pair with hyaluronic acid serum. enriched with hyaluronic acid, MSM, vitamin E. helps with dullness, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, fine lines.
ingredients list: aqua, cassia angustifolia seed extract, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, dimethyl sulfone, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, acrylates/c10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, tocopheryl acetate, simmondsia chinensis seed oil, centella asiatica extract, equisetum arvense extract, geranium maculatum extract, taraxacum officinale extract, sodium hydroxide, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin.
the box
description at the back
the packaging: it comes in regular cardbox with color accent on the box. at first fss came out with three serums, blue one for hyaluronic acid, yellow for vitamin c and red for retinol. there's a description on the back in english and ingredients list as well. they put a seal on top of the box. the bottle is a dark brown glass bottle with dropper to dispense the product. it's usual for vitamin c serum to come in dark brown bottle, as vitamin c is oxidized by sunlight. some vitamin c are unstable so you have to keep it in the fridge. the fss one is quite stable so i don't put it in the fridge and nothing changed up until now. the dropper works well in a way.
ingredients list
how the bottle looks like
the scent: this is scentless, but since it contains quite a mix of ingredients, obviously it would have some natural scent of the ingredients. it's a bit unpleasant at first, but as time goes by, maybe i'm getting used to the scent, but it's not as strong as the first time.
the dropper (you can see it's a bit left on the rim, right?)
the serum on my hand
after patting it in
the product: the serum is a thick cloudy white gel type serum. since it's quite thick, it's not easy to pick the serum with the dropper. though i'd tried to pinch it for several seconds, i would only get a drop or two. it's supposed to be homogen, but probably because the serum is easily smeared on the rim of the bottle then getting dragged to the neck by the dropper, it became messy on the neck of the bottle. some serum dried on the neck and probably got dragged back inside. i can feel some tiny dry bits inside the serum, but it dissolves after i massage it with my hands. but it's annoying to wipe clean the neck after using the serum. i tried to use it carefully, holding the dropper straight so it won't touch the side of the bottle, but still, some would spill anyway. as i've mentioned, the serum doesn't oxidize at all even though i didn't store it in the fridge. this one contains sodium ascorbyl phosphate, which is one of vitamin c derivatives that's quite stable, though it's not as stable as ascorbyl glucoside or THD. it spreads around easily and leaves glowy finish. to tacky feeling afterward once it's absorbed. there's no tingling sensation as well.
progress on my right cheek
notice reduce redness as well as lightening of my acne scar
progress on left cheek
reduce redness and some dark spot are lightened as well
the result: this serum contains aloe and centella which both are good for soothing. that's why using the serum can calm my redness as well. it also feels moisturizing as well. it layers well under and over other skincare products that i use. i use this daily in the morning as i use other actives at night. though stable, SAP is less potent than ascorbyl glucoside, that's why on my fair skin, it's hard to notice the result. you can see from the progress pictures that although i can see some redness subsides, a few dark spots also lightens. my acne scars also lightened as well, but it takes time. unfortunately, this serum doesn't last long. i can barely managed to take my one month progress picture probably days before i would finish this serum.

i have to say that this serum is working though slowly. price wise it's still considered affordable. if you're looking for an affordable and stable vitamin c serum, especially from a local brand, this one might be good option for you. i think it'd be suitable for all skin types as it's not irritative. probably as long as you don't dread your money being spilled on the rim of the bottle and having to clean the neck afterward, then this serum is a good option for you. as for me, there are some other local brands that offer vitamin c serum as well, so i might try them all before deciding.
last time i bought the famous muji toner in the light version, and thought that it was too light for my skin. so this time when i got to visit muji japan, i bought the moisture version one. if you didn't know, there are three types of muji sensitive toner, light - moisture- high moisture. i've tried the light version (you can read it here) so now i'm trying the moisture version, hoping it would be more moisturizing.
this is the description from their website: a skin care series that uses natural water from kamaishi, iwate prefecture. moisturizes sensitive skin that is worried about dryness. contains purslane extract, grapefruit seed extract, and lipidure R (polyquaternium-51), which have a high moisturizing effect. hypoallergenic, gentle on delicate skin. fragrance free, color free, mineral oil free, weakly acidic, paraben free, alcohol free, allergy tested (not all people are allergic).

the packaging: it comes in a transparent plastic bottle with metal-like screw cap. there's description at the back of the bottle in japanese as well as ingredients list in english. there's a measuring number on the side of the bottle so you can see how much toner is left in the bottle. they have the full size bottle 200 ml and the large size 400 ml and also the travel size which is only 50 ml. mine is the 200 ml one. usually japanese products come in minimal packaging. either they don't come with boxes, or they don't seal the opening. but it guess since this one doesn't have plastic sealing on the outer part of the bottle, they seal the bottle opening to make sure it doesn't spill.
the bottle
ingredients list on the bottle
the scent: just like in the description, it's unscented. i don't know why but when a japanese product is unscented, it's truly unscented. like there's no ingredients that dares to stand out so no scent comes from the ingredients.
measurement number on the side
the bottle opening
surprisingly, they put sealing on the opening
the product: it's a watery toner and it looks like water and feels like water. i don't feel the difference between the moisture type and the light type. both are watery. sinks in quickly to my skin. i can layer this toner without any problem, and it combines well with my other skincare product. the first three ingredients in the moisture version are water, glycerin and DPG, while the light one has different order - water, DPG and then glycerin. they only change glycerin and DPG.
how it looks like on my hand
after patted it in
the result: i don't think i feel much different between the light type and the moisture type. both sinks in quickly to my skin and i can layer well. with the light type, i remember three layers can still feel light. but with this type, three layers i start to feel the added moisture. i usually stop at three or four layers because i still have other products to put on top of it that added more moisture. i guess there's not so much different between the light type and the moisture type especially if you only use one layer. this one gives hydrating and nothing else, but it doesn't promise anything else, so it does what it's supposed to do.

anyway, this toner is pretty famous, especially for those who has sensitive skin as this is unscented. i don't know how the ingredients would be for the high moisture type, so maybe next time i get the chance, i'd try that one to check the difference. as for me, the moisture type now isn't enough as i've been using more actives than before. but if you have oily skin and live in hot and humid country, this kind of toner would be a good choice. price wise, muji skincare is usually quite affordable and it comes in big size too.
i bought several real techniques brushes couple months ago. most of them were travel sizes one at first (i bought more full size brushes after trying the travel size brushes). i bought the RT grab and go at first, then the mini multitask and the midi sculpting next. i've talked about the other two, so it's time to talk about the mini sculpting brush.

the description on the website: the mini medium sculpting brush is perfectly sized for naturally defined contours on-the-go. use with liquid or cream contour. full size head, compact handle. perfectly sized for naturally defined contours on-the-go.
the packaging
the packaging: it comes in a transparent plastic box. you can see the brush from the outside. at the back, there's description in english. just like other brushes, they color coded the brush. pink for cheek brushes so this one comes in pink accent all around the box (the orange ones are for face and the purple ones for eyes).
description at the back
the product: the brush looks similar to the full size one, only it's shorter. it has glossy pink handle but matte at the bottom. there's RT/406 printed at front and the name of the brush at the back. there's no separate ferrule like other brushes. the brush comes in angled shape. the bristles is very soft. a bit dense but not as dense as the RT grab/go multitask face brush. the handle is 6 cm tall so the whole brush is about 9 cm tall. just like the multitask brush, it is easier to hold rather than the RT grab and go one.
how the brush looks like
the result: i make a mistake when i bought the brush. i thought since the grab and go is for cream product, i thought the mini sculpting one could be used with powder bronzer. there was no description on the online shop where i bought it, and i didn't remember to check in RT's website. so i was surprised when i saw that it's for liquid or cream contour again. but i didn't have any mini powder bronzer, so i keep using it for powder bronzer. for your information, my powder bronzer is the physician formula butter bronzer in the lightest shade. i can use this brush for my bronzer because the shade is quite light. i can still blend it okay without making it look too dark. but i have to be careful not to pick up too much product with the brush. i don't have any cream bronzer so i can't say anything about the result with cream. but i will update if i decided to buy any.
the brush is a bit dense than the multitask one
anyway, out of three mini brushes that i bought, so far i like them all. it's practical to bring them when you're travelling and they works really well too. though elsewhere real techniques is considered as budget brand, here with the customs and the exchange rate factor, the price became higher. but luckily, real techniques brushes are often on sales, so better get them while on sale. as for me, i can't wait to test the full size brushes that i just bought. i hope they perform as well as the mini ones.
my husband's sudden plan for us to staycation at bali last november got me buying travel size brushes. i bought the real techniques grab and glow and the multitask brush as i thought it would be perfect for brush, bronzer and highlighter and the multitask for powder because i used to bring cushion for travelling so i don't need brush for my base. and i was glad that it arrived just in time before our departure.

this is the description from the website: the mini multitask brush makes blush, bronzer, and highlighter application easy on the go. plush tapered bristles for soft focus application. use with powder blush or powder bronzer.
the packaging
the packaging: this comes in a plastic packaging. for cheek brushes, usually it has pink as base color for the packaging. at front, it's completely transparent so you can see the brush from the outside. at the top you can see "cheek" text and also the name of the brush in the middle of the front part. at the back there's a bit description in english.
description at the back
the product: the handle is pink and glossy. real techniques color coded their handles according to the type of brushes. pink for cheek, orange for face, and purple for eyes. i guess it's easier to grab the brush since you can see the difference. and it's beginner friendly since you'd know which brush for which part of your face. since this is a mini one, the handle is only 6 cm tall. it has RT texted printed on the handle along with the brush number. for the multitask brush, it's 407. they also printed the name of the brush at the back handle. the bristles is really soft. i thought my previous brushes were soft, but this one if softer. plush and soft. it's 4 cm tall so the whole brush is about 10 cm tall. it's tapered on one side but it still has a dome shape. i  have no problem holding it, but if you have bigger hands than mine, then it might be too small for your hands.
the mini multitask brush
the result: i brought it with me during our staycation to bali, and i used it almost everyday. i use it for powder and blush. it works great. i can't stop admiring how soft the bristles are. i use it with pressed powder, and it works okay. since the brush is really soft, i have to swirl the brush several times more than i used to. the result is really seamless. somehow the brush blurs the powder and make it less powdery if that makes sense. however, as for blush, if i'm using something pigmented, then the result would be okay. but if i use a less pigmented blush, then i have to apply it multiple times until i get the result that i want.
how the bristles looks like, it's fluffy and soft
anyway, after trying real techniques brushes, now i get it why people love real techniques brushes. their handles are firm and their bristles are soft. even in travel sizes, they work really well. now i'm hoping i could sell my old brush set so i can buy a brush set from real technique. i've been eyeing their everyday essentials set, so i hope i could buy it someday.
we were about to go to bali for a short getaway last november, and i thought it's a good chance to use up my makeup. but i don't have any travel brushes. i was thinking of getting aeris travel brush set, but it was sold out anywhere, so i started to look at real techniques travel brushes. i decided to try the grab and glow because i saw this on lipstickmafia's instagram when she used this, and i like how it has 2 in 1 brush and the smaller one could be used with cream/stick highlighter. so i get this one first. later i like it so i bought another two, which is the multitask face and the mini contour. will review that separately, so now let's talk about this 2 in 1 first.

this is the description from their website: meet your all-in-one essential brush for on-the-go style. this dual-headed brush creates face and cheek looks in a compact and sleek way. includes:
- multitask face - use with powder or liquid foundation and bronzer
- multitask cheek - use with powder or cream highlighter and blush
100% cruelty free

the packaging: it comes in a pink mesh plastic back. they put the brushes separately in a plastic tray at first inside the bag. there's a small label with a short description of the brushes in english. you can keep using the bag to bring the brush while travelling, so it's a pretty good deal, two brushes and a small bag.
the bag
the brushes inside
the product: this is a 2-in-1 brush, meaning there are two brushes and can be connected as one. the top part is the multitask face brush. it comes with black plastic handle that has RT/GO label printed on it. there's also "multitask face" printed on the other side. the handle is a bit flat and short, but it's still comfortable to hold. the handle is about 5,5 cm and the whole brush would be about 8,5 cm tall. the bristles itself is very soft and dense and comes in angled shape. since it's quite dense, no wonder they suggest to use it with liquid foundation or bronzer. the other brush is the multitask cheek. it has pink plastic handle, with "multitask cheek" printed on it. it's quite in tone with other brushes. as you've known, RT usually use pink handles for their cheek brushes. the second brush however, is a lot smaller and shorter than the first one. the handle is about 3 cm tall and the whole brush would be 4,5 cm tall thus it's a bit tricky to hold. it's also a bit flat as well. if you see it from the top, the bristles look like oval in shape. but this one is flat, not angled like the first brush. the bristle is dense and soft as well, but not as dense as the first brush. they recommend using it with powder or cream highlighter and blush. however, i think it's too small for blush, so i never use it with blush. but i always use it with highlighter.
the multitask face brush
look at how dense the bristles is
the result: as i've said before, the multitask face is quite dense, so it's perfect for liquid or cream products. i never use it with foundation, but i use it with my cream blush. it works well since my cream blush is not pigmented, so the dense brush picks up more product and then it gets blended easily as well. it works well like when i use my finger. at first i was afraid that the dense brush would make it harder to blend the product, but i was wrong. it blends the product just okay. as for the multitask cheek, as i've said, i use it with my highlighter. i usually use it with my stick highlighter. it works well to put the product on my face, however, blending it in is a bit tricky. it's a small brush and the handle is quite short, so it's a bit hard to hold hence a bit difficult to move the brush to blend the highlighter. but it works just okay to blend the highlighter.
the multitask cheek
it's dense as well and can you see how small it is compared to my finger?
i have to say i'm happy with my purchase. i usually bring my stick/cream products while travelling, so this brush fits right in. i can use it fo my blush and highlighter, then use the other brush for contour and powder. if you need brush for travelling and you don't like to bring too many brushes, then this might be a good option for you. price wise, real techniques often being sold on sale price, so it's more affordable that way.
my sister was going to the US for her impending honeymoon and i asked her to get me some beauty stuff. little did i know that she got me something else. it was bite beauty sephora beauty insider lip kit. now, i've been reading and hearing lots of stuff about bite beauty, especially their amuse bouche lipstick and their agave lip balm, so i'm pretty excited about this lip kit.

this is the description from influenster website: a kit of lip essentials made with good-for-you ingredients. experience high-pigment, creamy color in two exclusive shades with a moisture-rich lipstick and lip crayon. exfoliate with a conditioning scrub, then soothe with a hydrating balm. set includes: 0.05 oz/ 1.55 g mini amuse bouche lipstick in chai, 0.031 oz/ 0.89 g mini matte creme lip crayon in glace, 0.018 oz/ 0.50 g agave lip balm, 0.018 oz/0.50 g agave lip scrub.

the packaging: it comes in a box with picture of every products inside at the front of the box. at the back, there's an ingredients list of everything inside. and after you getting them out of the box, you will get a mini lip crayon, a super mini lipstick, and a paper sleeve that contains the lip scrub and lip balm. the later has packaging like medicine blister, pretty interesting for lip balm and lip scrub sample.
the box

all the descriptions at the back

for easier way to describe the product, i will review each product separately:
- agave lip scrub: this is the description from sephora website - a gentle lip scrub that cleanses, exfoliates, and conditions lips with raw brown sugar, pineapple enzymes and exotic oils, leaving them beautifully smooth and soft. and essential part of any nighttime ritual, the agave sugar lip scrub is a triple-action, foaming lip scrub that's infused with exotic oils, brown sugar and pineapple enzymes. it cleanses and gently exfoliates, while the agave syrup moisturizes and conditions your lips.
all things inside

as i've said before, it's packed in a medicine blister which looks like medicine tablet packaging, except this one has lip scrub. at the back there's a text indicating which side is the lip scrub. and you just have to peel off the the back of the foil to uncover the lip scrub. the lip scrub smells like sugar or honey.. something sweet but not too overwhelming. the lip scrub is brownish in color, very sticky and i can feel the sugary bits inside that's supposed to be the scrub. it feels harsh, even more harsh than my etude lip scrub. it really looks like brown sugar cooked in syrup, sticky but it has harsh bits inside. you're supposed to massage the agave sugar lip scrub over the lips and add water to create a milky foam to wash away any impurities or dry patches. i did as instructed but i followed up with the lip balm instead of allowing the oil to soak into skin overnight. the sample is quite thick so for me it lasts me about 2-3 uses. i only need tiny amount to scrub my whole lips. and afterward i would add the water before wiping it off. i can say that it works well, although i don't see the difference with other lip scrub that i've tried. i'm glad i get to try this one but i won't splurge myself buying this lip scrub. it's even too harsh for my preference.
the blister that contains both the lip balm and the lip scrub

how it looks like at front
- agave lip balm: this is the description from sephora website - a perfect soothing balm for ultimate hydration and recovery that quickly repairs and restores lips. a must have for on-the-go lip care, agave lip balm is the perfect travel essential. agave lip balm is a nourishing formula made from agave and rare madagascan vanilla CO2 extract. lips stay hydrated and protected all day long, making your lips look natural on their own. it also acts as a primer for any color application.
left: lip scrub
right: lip balm
just like the scrub, it comes side by side with the scrub in the medicinal blister. unlike the scrub, this one doesn't have distinctive scent. and since this is a balm, it's very hard to get the product out because it's tightly pack in the blister. once i can get the balm out, it's very thick so it's very hard to spread around my lips. but once it's kind of melted, i can work it on my lips. unlike the scrub, this one is unscented. it's also very moisturizing and thick that i think i put wax on my lips. i think people with super dry lips or live in winter countries will appreciate this lip balm. but as for me, i don't think i like it. i'm good with my ordinary body shop lip balm.

- matte creme lip crayon: this is the description from sephora website - a high pigment lip crayon with long-wearing, water-resistant color and a matte finish that feels hydrating. this long-wearing lip crayon delivers rich, high-pigment color that lasts. it's made with orange peel wax, which seals in hydration for a water-resistant, matte finish that feels moist. lips look more supple and smooth, and feel nourished and protected. i get the color glace which is a dusty mauve.

it comes in a grey pen like packaging that you can twist so you can get the product out. there's a cap covering the crayon tip. you can also read the shade name label at the bottom of the crayon. the crayon has pointy tip which goes blunt in no time. it's smaller than usual lip crayon, but it's still comfortable to hold. i have to agree about the color, it's dusty mauve alright. a bit too dark for fair to light skin, but it will work okay even as nude spectrum for medium to dark skin tone. it leaves matte finish but it doesn't feel too drying compared with some liquid matte lipstick. it lasts decently too, but i think i don't use it all day long so i can't say for sure. it's not transfer-proof and it would be gone with heavy meal or drink. you can just swipe it on your lips, however, i've been using it differently. the lip crayon is quite pigmented, so if i use it straight, it would be too dark for me. but if i only dab it on my lips lightly, and then rub with my finger to spread it around, it would be fine.

- mini amuse bouche lipstick: this is the description from australia's sephora website - high impact lipsticks in dimensional shades deliver extreme moisture, creamy texture and long-lasting wear. handcrafted in small batches using a low-heat process, amuse bouche lipsticks preserve a balanced blend of lip-quenching nutrients, vitamins and omega oils that are essential to achieve healthy lips. made with 12 edible oils and triple-milled pigments, these lipsticks provide saturated colour with a subtle citrus flavor. so go ahead, swipe on sensational colour and feel good about it! i get chai which is a mauve brown.

look at how small it is on my palm
the mini amuse bouche lipstick looks exactly like the full size one, only the travel size is much smaller. it has the unique curvy top on the cap as well as bite beauty's mark on the body. there's also B's mark on the lipstick. the lipstick has matte dark grey almost black body. you can read the shade name on the bottom. the lipstick is so tiny that i have difficulty to apply it on my lips. usually the slanted side would be enough to cover my lips, but this one doesn't. the lipstick is as pigmented as the lip crayon one, but this one is more matte than the lip crayon. i feel the lip crayon is slightly less drying compared to the lipstick. though i would say it's still comfortable to use the lipstick than mac matte lipstick. the color, however, is even darker than the lip crayon. even when i just dab it on my lips, it'd still look dark on me. i have to smudged it a bit to make it look not too vampy on me. i guess if you're darker than fair skin tone, this might work really well for daily. as for me, i prefer the lip crayon formula than the amuse bouche, but i heard they discontinue the amuse bouche. oh well. both are crazy expensive so i'm glad i get to try the mini sizes one.
aside from uniqlo, you'd might notice in my OOTD pictures that i mostly use local brands now. in the beginning, i wasn't addicted to one brand either, so i never had a favorite brand, until uniqlo. but uniqlo is very conservative. you won't find any trendy items or things that has bright colors there. though i also don't follow fashion, but still there are few things that you want so you keep looking trendy, though in your own way. i like how uniqlo keeps its classic design, so it's timeless in way. people would still need and use it for years to come. anyway, since trendy items are usually goes in and out, i don't think i would wear them for a long time. so getting it in reasonable price is my choice. i resort to local brands for those things that i can't buy or won't buy from uniqlo. one of local brands that in my go-to is maven.

you might have heard of maven, i bet it's a rising star right now. i heard of maven when the muse was keth agustine. at that time, i like their classic design, but i didn't buy any as i think the designs are not my cup of tea. then they christina brennan as their next muse. at that time, i was tempted to buy to see what the hype is about. some of the designs i do like but again, at that time, the price was getting higher than the previous collection, and i was hesitant to buy at that price, so no buy either.

then i heard they had a sister brand, abbeytale. abbeytale is a much cheaper brand since they're using local materials while maven usually uses imported stuff. at that time, abbeytale didn't have any muses yet. then they have one, i forgot the name of the muse. the design is similar with maven, so i decided if i would try, then i would get abbeytale first. at their next launch, i bought a top from them. the fit and cut is okay for me. the material is linen, and not super soft, but it's still okay. it was a set actually, but i don't like the set so i just bought the top. then maven came out with the owner as their muse and they joined basha market as well. i decided to drop by and looked at it first. i saw the material and i deemed the price point was okay, so i bought a dress and a jumper dress (this was when they have christina as their muse, but they restocked it at basha). then at the next collection, i started to buy what i like, but not on shopping spree like other people. i've seen hardcore fans of maven, and they would buy all designs in all colors. though i'm tempted, but i keep remembering what i told my kids. just buy what you need. so i keep buying stuff that i think i can use it now and later, and i don't have anything like it in my collection, or i can mix and match it with my other collection.

enough rumbling i guess. let's jump into some thoughts after buying several of their items.
what i like:
- their design is a bit classical in a way. it's not super trendy, but it still has its uniqueness.
- their designs are a bit conservative as well, that's why i was attracted to their dresses at first, because they always come out with midi length dress. and i've proven that it's safe to use even though you're running around toddlers. most of their dresses are either pregnant or breastfeeding friendly as well.
- talking about dress, i like their dresses because they have pockets! i know, dresses with pockets are rare, so that's why i like their dresses. anyway, their pants and skirts usually come with pockets too, so if you can't live without pocket, you should see their collection.
- they only have all size sizing. this might be a good thing and a bad thing. so let's talk about the good thing. good thing is, though it's all size, they usually come with rubbers and some tricks so it would fit busty ladies, ladies who want to hide their belly, ladies with big bum and thigh, and so on. for me, it's practical in a way. it's troublesome when you have to measure every time you want to buy clothing online, that's why i like uniqlo because their sizing is constant for different designs, so i can buy their clothes without having to try them every time. that also applies to maven. once i know i can fit their tops and pants, i can buy them again without thinking twice. for me, i have to make sure i fit the bust and waist and the length of the dress. and maven collection ticks them all.
- the colours in their collection are a bit safe as well. though it might not be monochrome, but it was not a neon pink or anything ridiculous. though i have to say, they came up with some yellow and orange back then, and it wasn't look cheap or cheesy.
- their materials are worth the money. if you've bought their dresses, you can feel the fabric is heavy. i have to say, their linens are soft, their haywire are stretchy and soft, even their tweed are good. i guess that's why their price is getting higher each time. the quality of their fabrics are really good.

what i don't like:
- though i have said that their fabric is a good material, if it comes in a dress, they use quite a lot of fabric. thus making it heavy. i have their madeline dress and i rarely use it because it's quite heavy. i have sensitive shoulders. back in my school days, my new uniform would irritate my shoulders for several uses. and that happens with the madeline dress. it's heavy that it would burden my shoulder. so as long as i don't use it for a long time, i should be fine. the heavy fabric and delicate fabric also give problem when washing it. it would be too heavy for the machine and it would be troublesome to hand wash it. also their scuba/haywire isn't supposed to iron. but it's not wrinkled easily. so i guess their fabric is a good/bad situation.
- as i've said that they only all size sizing. again, this could be a good/bad thing. though they usually come with rubber so you can keep using it even though you have big waist or bust, but still, it might not be enough, or look weird if you're too petite. as well as the midi length dress. for me, the length is suitable and decent for me. but for petite ladies, the dress might drown them. that also applies to their crop top. if you have long torso, and don't want to show off some skin, you might not like their design.
- the design is somewhat repeated. they might repeat the whole designs some time, only in different colours and materials. but they might also revamp the design but still look similar. if you're familiar with their items, their bianc top is similar to their famous helena top and bianca top. and since they're getting famous now, they repeated their old items and renewed it in new materials and colours. it's not a bad thing, but if you're already have their old collections, it would be repetitive to buy similar things only in different materials and colour.
- personally, i like their dresses and pants better. but i don't have many luck with their tops. some of the reasons are crop top length, their design is not practical with having to use pin so you won't show cleavage or it has long tie that might unpractical if you're running around little kids. aside from abbeytale top that i've bought before, i only have one top from maven, which is their hansel grettel set. and i don't quite like it either. it has this design on its bust area which makes my bust looks bigger. but it's still okay. i can still use is, though sometimes i don't like how it makes my bust look fuller.

for now, that's my pro and cons if you're considering to buy your first maven. for now, it's best to buy from their website, but their website crashes often when they are launching new collection. i hope they would improve their website so it won't be pain to buy just one item. though you can be patient and wait for their stock to be available in several stockist, but it won't be as complete as their website. as for me, if they keep repeating similar designs, i don't think i would buy them again. though if you asked me, i would definitely recommend them as local fashion brand to try. you would get your money worth when you buy their collection. and talking about abbeytale, if you like maven but won't like to spend the money, then try their abbeytale. though the material might be local, it's not that bad. it's still good quality fabric. their designs are being copied by other online shops, so that speaks something.
i used to be afraid to try acid. mainly because i don't know how to counter the effect. but after reading numerous blogs and instagram reviews as well as some youtube videos, i know better now. before trying retinol, i've only used cosrx BHA and AHA. i like the BHA but not the AHA. i've tried the ordinary lactic acid as well and i didn't like it either. i also have tried the ordinary retinoid product, and it was so-so because back then i didn't know what to expect. after that, i knew better and i tried DE retinol. it was pretty strong and my skin suffered a bit when trying that, but after adjusting my serum (i used to only use one serum at night, but now i used two!), my skin condition got better. and then local brands started to release acid products, like bhumi, FSS, avoskin, votre peau and lately somethinc. i've tried votre peau one (if you're interested, you can check it here) and after that i bought somethinc because it was hype around the time i bought it. so let's hope it works..

this is the description from their website: taking your skin (&neck) care routine to the next level! introducing level 1% (encapsulated) retinol. encapsulated retinol 1% with the newest gentinol-200 technology from korea who has more greater stability, safe for sensitive skin, and formulated with a pH equivalent to skin pH 5-6 so it doesn't irritate your skin. ceramide and hyaluronic acid in this retinol protects the skin from free radicals, anti pollution and retain moisture level in your skin. encapsulated retinol penetrates skin cells, divides itself, detects skin problems in the targeted layers and repairs all the problems. at the same time, the encapsulated crystal particles also create a protective shield on the surface of the skin to prevent it from dehydration.
why is encapsulated retinol more effective? retinol works from the inner skin layer to the top, so it can target the right areas and achieve the desired results. with encapsulation technology, retinol does not easily evaporate into the air and exposed to UV light, so that its effectiveness remains protected and not oxidized easily.
ingredients: aqua, terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid, butylene glycol, glycerin, ceramide-3, triethanolamine, retinol, hydroxyethylcellulose, phenoxyethanol, allantoin, hyaluronic acid, disodium EDTA.
the bottle
description at the back
the packaging: this comes with no box, they seal the bottle with plastic sealing. the bottle is transparent green frosted glass bottle with dropper head. it only comes in 20 ml, which is a little bit odd. usually mini size is around 10 ml, and full size one around 30 ml. this falls in between. anyway, they put description in english and indonesian as well as ingredients list in tiny texts at the back of the label. usually retinol would come in dark glass bottle, so i have no idea about the packaging. perhaps since it's encapsulated so it doesn't need dark glass bottle? anyway, the dropper works well. my only complain is that obviously it's too short so when i was about to run out of the serum, it's harder to get the serum out.
the serum inside
the scent: this has fresh scent, which is weird. the ingredients list doesn't list anything as added fragrance, and i believe retinol doesn't smell as good as this. the drunk elephant one smells rather foul. votre peau has added fragrance in its ingredient list. however, the scent is quite subtle, so it doesn't bother me.
how it looks like on my hand
after patted it in
the product: it's a light yellow liquid. i don't see separate layers from the outside, but the instruction says to shake it well before using, so i did. i don't count how many drops that i use, but around half dropper to three quarter for my whole face and neck. it spreads around easily as it's liquid, and it gets absorbed easily too.
the first picture is a week after i started using it
for the first two weeks i use it every other day - no redness
on 14/1 it's a progress pic where i started to use it daily, a bit redness
21/1 after getting used to using it daily, the redness subsides
the result: at first, i use it every other night for about two weeks and then i try using it every night for around two weeks as well. during the first two weeks, i don't see any problem with it. no irritation, no flaky skin, nothing. i use it in watery serum slot. on top of this, i use a hydrating serum and an all-around anti aging serum. then i use it every night. i still don't get any problem using it every night, though i decided not to use it on sunday. since i have used retinol before, i notice that i can see the result on my forehead easily. usually my forehead area will be more glowy after using retinol. however, i don't see any difference in acne prevention. i still get acne, but it helps speeding up clearing small acne, but not the case with cystic acne. they website also says that it helps with brightening skin tone as well as lightening dark spots. well, i don't see those effects, but perhaps because it's not long enough to see the result. lately, since i've been using it together with vitamin c and bha (though all of them are low percentage and not together at one time. vitamin c in the morning, bha in the afternoon and retinol at night), i have no problem, no irritation at all.
similar progress result on the other side
using it every other day don't give me redness
but using it every day makes my skin red a bit but after awhile it subsides
anyway, this is really a good start if you want to try retinol. it's gentle enough and it really doesn't irritate your skin. price point, since this only comes in 20 ml, the price is pretty reasonable. however, this is quite popular so it gets sold out quickly. compared to votre peau, this one is definitely a bit stronger, but both are still gentle. as for me, i like somethinc better than votre peau. anyway, there are other brands that has retinol, like bhumi and avoskin, and i haven't tried them, so until i finished try them all, i won't make any decision on which to repurchase yet. anyway, if you have tried them, please do tell me about it.
