sulwhasoo essential balancing water

sulwhasoo has been on my wishlist since forever. i didn't buy it simply because i think on normal days, it would be too expensive for me. however, since the pandemic, sulwhasoo has been holding sales more frequently and they gave GWPs as well. i was originally interested in their bloomstay line as i think it would suit my skin better. but i also wanted to try the FCAS as it was their best sellers, so i got two sets. the bloomstay serum set and the FCAS set. i got basic set as gift from the bloomstay set. however, the products from the basic set is similar to the FCAS set, so for the toner and the emulsion, i won't write separate reviews as both are the same only in different size.

this is the description from their website: a quick-absorbing beauty water packed with moisturizing purslane and antioxidant-rich goji berries that delivers an instant surge of moisture while softening and hydrating skin. this lightweight gel-to-liquid beauty water is fortified with moisturizing purslane and antioxidant-rich goji berries to provide lasting hydration and enhance your skin's glow. not only does this hydrating beauty water sink in instantly, but this unique liquid densely packed with nourishing purslane and antioxidant-rich goji berries also addresses dryness and dehydration for noticeable dewiness. with continued daily use, this light-as-air formula leaves skin looking visibly smoother.

the packaging: the basic set comes in a white/yellow box which is the signature color of sulwhasoo. there's a list of the products inside at the back. all the products are placed on a plastic tray inside so everything is safe and secure. the toner itself comes in a oval shaped transparent plastic bottle with yellow screw cap. the opening is the usual size for a toner sample opening. all the toner/emulsion bottles come in the same shape only in different color according to the line. in the basic set, the toner comes in 15 ml. while in the FCAS set it comes in 30 ml.

the scent: this has sulwhasoo's original scent, which is hanbang. it's a mix of a bit ginseng and herbal scent. however, the scent is surprisingly subtle. i think the eye cream smells stronger than the toner.

the product: when i tried it, i haven't read the description. i was worried that the toner might spill but even though i turn the bottle upside down, there's nothing coming out. so i have to tap it on my palm before the toner would come out. the toner is just as described. it's a gel to liquid toner. quite interesting. at first it would look viscous but as you spread it all over your face, it turns watery and sinks in nicely. if you read the ingredients list, this toner has a bunch of moisturizing ingredients. but it also contains alcohol as well. in fact, it's number 2 after water, so if you are avoiding alcohol, then you might have to skip this.

the result: after using it regularly, i can say that this toner is quite interesting. i was worried that it might be too rich. however, this toner sinks in nicely and gives subtle glow. it's hydrating yet at the same time it's a bit moisturizing as well. if i have to compare it with the bloomstay one, this one is a notch more moisturizing, but only just a bit. after it's absorbed, there's no tacky feeling. anyway, after using this regularly, even though it's been hot lately here, my skin seems glowing and not oily. honestly, i don't know what kind of sorcery this is, but i do like it.

gee.. i feel like i'm digging my own grave. i was reluctant to try sulwhasoo mainly because i was afraid i might like it and not afford to repurchase it on normal price. and i was right. i do like this toner. however, if i have to be picky, i would splurge on the FCAS and not the toner. i think this toner might be suitable for all skin types, and i can layer it with other skincare products. so as long as you know what other stuff to put on top of it, you'll be fine. but if you have super oily skin and maybe not so mature skin, the bloomstay line would be a better choice.
