milani prep set glow illuminating transparent face powder

i used to have oily skin, but now as i'm getting older, it's more like combination and toward normal skin now. so, being used to have oily skin, powder is something that i always have in my makeup stash. i used to use loose powder since i thought it absorbs oil better. but it's messy, and not travel friendly, so i started to use compact powder. especially since i've been to japan, i've been trying their face compact powders. but sometimes, it seems too matte. too flat. anyone else have been feeling that? you want to set your makeup but it's too matte? well.. that's why people love hourglass powder. their illuminating powder is bomb. but the price is too expensive. i couldn't afford one. so i keep putting it in my wishlist forever. but, i saw someone mentioned milani illuminating powder on youtube (maybe it's emily noel at first then allie glines.. but i don't know for sure). luckily, i was low on my powder stash. i only have my canmake and it's super matte and dry. and the other muji powder is bit too dark for me, so i'm justifying myself getting another powder. so when i saw my usual online shop sells this, i immediately buy one and try it.

this is the description from their website: an on-the-glow primer, setting powder and illuminator in one! prep + set + glow illuminating face powder delivers a natural healthy glow, blurs the look of imperfections, sets makeup and adds all-over radiance. the lit from within finish is flattering on all skin tone and skin types.

the packaging: it comes in plastic black compact case with plastic sealing on the outer. the top lid is transparent so you can see the pan inside. at the back there's a label indicating the product name and shade and a bit of description. since it has transparent window, definitely there's no mirror inside.

the shade: i was confused when i saw the label is written "02". i thought there's no shade number, only transparent so i was afraid that it might be too dark. but apparently, when i read on milani website, the no 1 is the other powder, the prep set and go, the matte one, and both is transparent. so the number is really misleading. they should've just said "transparent" without any number if there's no other shade. and transparent is not totally transparent. on the pan it looks light beige and you can see it being light beige on my hand swatch, but i think it will go transparent if you blend it well.

the product: the pan has similar shade to other powder pan that i've tried before, but it only weighs 8,5 gram which is less than usual powder weight. there's no pattern on the pan, no shimmer when i look at the pan. it reflects light though, the word "illuminating" might describe it well. but look closely there's no shimmer or glitter.

the result: i've tried using this powder several ways. on its own, it doesn't mattify much. it doesn't cover anything, just set the makeup underneath and make my face "lit from within" just as described. i also use this on top of matte powder. now, my canmake powder is super mattifying, so if i'm putting it on top of my canmake, the glow is not as visible as if i'm using it on its own. lately, i've been using canmake on my t zone and then set the rest with milani. and i will get matte t zone and lit from within face.
i swatch it on the right side of my hand
you can see that it glows a bit under the sunlight
i think if you're super oily, you might need another mattifying powder, but remember that it might dull this milani. the glow is really subtle, so it doesn't look as if you're wearing highlight, but your face doesn't look flat matte. when there's light hitting your face, your face will look like it's lit from within. not super glowy. i don't own and never tried hourglass or laura mercier so i can't compare them. but if you like super glowy finish, then you might want to skip this as this gives really subtle glow. if you don't like using multiple steps, then skip this as the effect is not significant. but i will probably repurchase this since lately i've digging glowy look. price point, milani is always on the higher price point than other drugstore brand, but it's still affordable, so it's really up to you. if you're looking for dupe of hourglass or laura mercier, you could try this one.
