visiting japan always means sunscreen haul. unfortunately, the last time i was in japan, it was the time for reformulation. so everything that i saw there was different from the one that i read back home. i had to do quick browsing everytime i wanted to get something, so it's not time effective. i decided to get the new biore base and not getting the new reformulation that everyone seems not fond of. there are 3 types of them, and i pick up the oil control one.
this is the description from kao singapore website: biore uv oil control base uv spf 50+PA++++ offers you uv protection while also prevents your makeup from wearing off. spf 50 + effectively protects skin from uvb rays that cause sunburn, dark spots and freckles. PA++++ effectively protects skin from uva rays that cause suntan and reduce skin's elasticity. makeup base conceals pores and absorbs excess sebum for longer-lasting makeup. sweat resistant formula keeps makeup looking fresh for longer. oil control formula with a sheer toned gel for shine-free coverage with a soft matte finish. light gel texture spreads easily for instant absorption with no sticky after-feel.
the packaging |
the packaging: the packaging is different. usually they will only come with cardboard backing covered in hard plastic like toothbrush packaging, but this time, it comes in a black elliptical box. at front you can see the picture of the tube and also color label which differentiate all 3 types. blue one is for oil control, the pink one is bright up, the yellow one is covering. at the back there are lots of text but everything is in japanese so i don't understand one bit.
the tube |
back of the tube |
the scent: usually biore sunscreen will smell a bit citrusy, but this one is different. it doesn't have distinctive smell. in fact i think it smells just like any other base product.
the spout |
the product: it comes in a grey plastic tube with black screw cap. it's slimmer than usual. it has rather longer spout to dispense the product. also, it weighs less. it only comes in 30 g, while the usual biore essence sunscreen comes in 50 g and the gel comes in 80 g. the base itself is a beige cream that's slightly thicker than the usual biore sunscreen. when swatched, it gives white base which will subside after the base is completely absorbed. since this is a base product, you should use the same amount as using your usual sunscreen to achieve the same protection level.
product on my hand |
after blending it in |
the result: this is slightly thicker than my previous biore essence, so i can feel it being dragged around my face when i try to spread this around. at first it will give you white base, but on me, it will diminish. now, i'm pretty pale, so if you have darker skin tone, you might want to read reviews from other people before buying it full size since there are no sample available that i know of. since this one is oil control, i decided to test it during hot days. i don't put powder on top to see whether or not the claim is true. although i don't use it the whole days, i managed to use it during noon and i have to say it doesn't make my nose greasy. but if i put foundation on top of it, somehow later that day i can see my foundation slips. so you really have to test and try with your trusted base makeup. this one is a good base. it doesn't cover up my pores but it helps even the skin tone a little bit and also has good oil control.
after 3-4 hours, i don't see extra greasiness on my t-zone |
as for someone who doesn't use primer everytime i use base makeup, this double-agent sunscreen/base product is a life saver for me. but, the downside is, i can't use it on my arms. i have to use separate sunscreen and that is suck. i also don't like how it only comes in 30 ml like any base product. since i'm using it as sunscreen, this might be finished in no time. so, better stick to the real sunscreen next time. definitely won't repurchase not because this one is bad, but i don't like how i need to separate sunscreen on my already hectic morning. but if you also like me who don't like using separate primer and sunscreen, then you could try it if you could get it. i don't see this one being sold on several online shops, but i bet there are other sellers out there. as for the price, it's affordable as always. oh well, let's keep searching for the perfect one..
